Dr. Tak Wah Wong Dermatology

Professor Tak-Wah Wong is affiliated with the Departments of Dermatology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and the Center of Applied Nanomedicine at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan. Within the university, he leads a dedicated team focused on skin cancer research at the University Hospital. He is also one of the founding members and serves on the Director Board of the Taiwanese Society of Investigative Dermatology. Professor Wong's research centers on various areas, including photobiology, infectious diseases, wound healing, oncology, and abnormal scarring. Notably, he pioneered the field of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Taiwan. He gained valuable experience during a two-year stint working alongside Professor Thomas Dougherty and Dr. Allan Oseroff at the PDT Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, New York, USA. Additionally, in 2016, he spent a year as a visiting scientist in Tung-Tien Sun's laboratory at the Department of Cell Biology, New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Professor Wong's research has expanded the application of PDT beyond oncology to include infectious diseases. This is due to the unique mechanism by which PDT destroys multiple organelles in microorganisms, making it challenging for them to develop resistance to treatment. He made a groundbreaking discovery by demonstrating that PDT can reduce drug resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In recent years, he has explored the effectiveness of PDT in treating fungal infections, particularly those caused by Candida. This research has resulted in patent applications in Taiwan, China, and the USA.
